The times when you reach out to new and exciting talents, whatever field they may be in, can be so rewarding when you meet the likes of Marchel and Saul of Style With A Vengeance. Vancouver is a city where its fashion scene may not be as heavy on the radar as other cities, but there is a new generation of emerging talent that has something to say. We sat down with the young couple to get to know them better.
Who are you?
Marchel: I’m a second generation Canadian-born-Chinese (CBC for short haha), who graduated from a diploma program for 3D Display Design.
Saul: I am a Canadian born jazz vibraphonist living in Vancouver.
What do you do?
Marchel: I’m part of the merchandising and display team at Topshop but I mostly just style the mannequins and do visuals while my other team members are more merchandise-focused. I helped open the Vancouver store in the Fall of 2012 and just last October, relocated to the new Richmond Centre location. On the side I do fashion photography and styling with Saul as the art director for our shoots since we tend to do more creative and conceptual photoshoots.
Saul: Im currently studying vibraphone in the Jazz Studies program at Capilano University. On the side, I enjoy helping and being a part of my friends’ work in fashion related projects.
Where do you live?
We both live together in Vancouver, BC
Describe your personal style.
Marchel: It’s hard to really pinpoint my personal style because I find I’m always experimenting with different looks. For a while I was really into a lot of monochromatic layers and athletic elements but now I’ve been transitioning to something a bit more inspired by Raf, J.W., and Craig Green. I don’t really know how else to describe it at the moment.
Saul: My style seems to evolve every few months as I am always inspired by new ideas and designers. Lately I’ve been into trying new things with colour blocking and shapes but at the end of the day, I just want to be wearing something thats comfortable hahaha.
Who are your favourite designers?
Marchel: Craig Green, Acne Studios, Raf Simons, and J.W. Anderson.
Saul: Acne Studios, Études Studio, Raf Simons and Gosha Rubchinskiy.
What is your most recent purchase?
Marchel: Gosha Rubchinskiy Cap and T-Shirt from Opening Ceremony
Saul: Oversized lattice-jaquard pants by Etudes Studios from Board of Trade in Vancouver
Who are your style icons?
Marchel: I mostly get inspired by lookbooks and full runway looks and not so much by people. I’m inspired by street style as well, but there’s not necessarily one person whose style I feel the need to emulate. For me, designers are where I find the inspiration and feeling behind an outfit, and street style is where I find inspiration in how to layer pieces differently.
Saul: I am not really inspired by anyone specific, I am usually more inspired by colours and images more than people. Every once in awhile i’ll be inspired by someone I see on the street or by a certain decade that I’ve rediscovered/happens to capture my interest at that moment.
What are your favourite places to shop?
In town our favourite places to shop are Neighbour, Holt Renfrew, and Want Apothecary. Online it’s definitely Ssense just because of their free shipping and no duties being a Canadian company. If it wasn’t for duties though we would definitely shop a lot more from Farfetch and Opening Ceremony.
Can you give us smart shopping advice?
We usually wait a week or two to see if we still want it at the end of the waiting period. After that, we usually try to visualize at least 3 outfits that we would definitely wear with the item right away.
5 things you can’t live without.
Marchel: My bed, good food, a few close friends, my Raf x Adidas shoes, and Saul.
Saul: Jazz, cigarettes, a hat, Marchel, and my pals.
